About the authors

Linda Bellos and Caroline Jones are renowned equality law experts. They have spent decades supporting the UK’s public, private and not-for-profit sectors to understand equality law and put it into practice. Like the rest of their work, this guide sets out to answer the question they are asked most frequently, “We know what we are supposed to do but how do we do it?”

Chapter 1: Equality legislation in the UK
Includes an outline of British equality and human rights legislation, civil and criminal law, using the courts, public sector duties, prohibited conduct, harassment, protected characteristics, resolving discrimination and harassment cases, and doing equality monitoring.

Chapter 2: Major religions
Describes the world’s major religions. Includes information and advice on forms of worship, dietary needs, dress codes, naming systems, language, respectful interactions and more.

Chapter 3: Minority communities
Gives an insight into the diversity of cultural practices amongst some of Britain’s minority communities. This knowledge can be especially important at times when officials must enter people’s homes, for example at times of bereavement or to conduct interviews or searches. It helps everybody to act in ways that are appropriate and sensitive to particular customs and practices.

Chapter 4: Being respectful
Includes a guide to good disability manners and using respectful language towards people in different minority groups.

Chapter 5: Useful links
How to find more information from websites dedicated to topics on age, asylum and immigration, disability, employment, Gypsy and Traveller community resources, Lesbian Gay Bisexual & Transgender community, mental health and more.
